The Decision That Moves the Strategy™

The Executive Coaching Business for 2026, Not as Usual

By CB Bowmam-Ottomanelli MCEC, CMC,

One of the recurring themes I hear from executive coaches across the globe is this: many practices are being shaken by the political environment, especially those working anywhere near DEI.

If 2025 forced coaches to rethink messaging and business models due to political noise, 2026 will require something deeper and far more strategic. It will challenge us to sharpen our decision-making, elevate our coaching impact, and strengthen leaders and organizations so they can thrive in uncertainty.

So here’s the real leadership question:

How do we get from where we are… to where we need to lead?

The answer? We must “walk the talk.” Executive coaches must embody the same courage, resilience, innovation, and adaptability that we have championed with our clients for years.

This moment requires us to:

  • Reinvent and rebrand our offerings
  • Realign delivery approaches
  • Re-examine pricing
  • Refresh our language
  • Lead from strategic strength—not defensive reaction

Because courage is not simply a message we teach. It is a discipline we model.

The 2026 Leadership Lexicon: The Top Business Words That Will Define 2026, And What They Really Mean for Executive Coaches

These aren’t buzzwords. They are strategic realities shaping boardrooms, policy rooms, and leadership conversations:

  • Adaptive Leadership — Leaders who reframe challenges and recalibrate direction in real time.
  • Decision Intelligence — Blending AI, data, and human judgment to create better outcomes.
  • Strategic Resilience — Not just “bouncing back,” but converting disruption into advantage.
  • Human-Centered AI — Technology designed to support trust, ethics, capability, and humanity.
  • Adaptive Workforce — Talent systems built for speed, fluid skills, and continuous learning.
  • Signal Over Noise — The discipline of filtering overwhelm to focus on what truly matters.
  • Cognitive Load Management — Reducing mental overwhelm so leaders can think clearly.
  • Purpose Performance — Purpose as a measurable driver of engagement and innovation.
  • Trust Infrastructure — Systems, culture, and leadership behaviors that sustain credibility.
  • Strategic Courage — Challenging assumptions, making bold decisions, and moving forward under pressure.

Let’s be clear: 2026 will not reward those with the most tools. It will reward those with the deepest clarity, courage, and leadership discipline.

This Is Our Moment to Pivot

Every profession eventually reaches a point where it must evolve to remain relevant. Coaching is no exception.

Too many coaches are reacting defensively or emotionally to political rhetoric. Instead, this is our opportunity to move forward strategically—to evolve conversations from controversy to leadership capability, from fear to resilience, and from reaction to Strategic Courage™.

One of the most powerful frameworks for doing this draws on the 7-Step Microcourage™ Process from my book:

Courage to Leap & Lead… Redefining Failure Into Success

Let’s explore how executive coaches can leverage it now.

Seven Courage Steps for Adaptive Leadership in 2026

STEP 1: TO EXERT — Step out of the quagmire

We must recognize where we are stuck—often in complexity we didn’t even realize we were standing in—and reclaim our ability to lead, innovate, and decide courageously.

STEP 2: TO EXPLORE — Apply critical thinking with no blame, shame, or guilt

Exploration requires courage. It means facing reality, confronting fears, and being open to change, even when it feels uncomfortable.

STEP 3: TO EXAMINE — Identify roadblocks and triggers

Ask better questions. Challenge assumptions. Seek truth. New thinking opens pathways to new execution.

STEP 4: TO EXPRESS — Speak out

Voice matters. Courage grows when we articulate truth, ask for guidance, and engage in honest leadership dialogue.

STEP 5: TO ENGAGE — Courage to listen, accept help, and acknowledge the help received

Every day, we see people striving to do their best and create impact. But real leadership courage recognizes the power of collaboration, the strength in receiving support, and the boldness of acknowledging collective contribution. Engagement allows individuals and teams to break barriers, take meaningful risks, and operate with confidence—grounded in the certainty that they are valued and supported as courageous thinkers and leaders.

STEP 6: TO EXECUTE — Courage to be right or wrong

Adaptive leadership requires action. The courage to decide—even without guarantees—creates momentum, learning, and growth.

STEP 7: TO RESURGE — Stand up, stand strong, and rise again

Resurgence is returning stronger, grounded in meaning, competence, determination, and impact.

A Practical Example: Reframing DEI Coaching Into Strategic Leadership

Instead of reactive positioning, we realign language to organizational growth and leadership capability.

Reposition the Language

  • Diversity → Adaptive Leadership / Decision Making
  • Equality → Adaptive Workforce
  • Inclusion → Trust Infrastructure

Now DEI becomes:

  • Leadership development
  • Organizational benefit
  • Increased accountability and engagement

Reimagine Delivery

Move from:

  • Long-term, dependency-based 1:1 coaching

To:

  • Workshops with assignments
  • Accountability cohorts
  • Scalable online learning

Redesign Pricing

Shift from:

  • Individual extended packages

To:

  • Group programs
  • Organizational pricing models
  • Scalable revenue streams

Rebrand

Examples:

  • Organizational Intensives
  • Executive Leadership Development Firm
  • Strategic Leadership Advisory Firm
  • Leadership Excellence Partner
  • Holistic Executive Performance Partner
  • Organizational Effectiveness Firm

These terms focus on outcomes, resilience, clarity, and performance—without triggering political landmines. They are fully aligned with both federal and corporate environments while honoring excellence.
